Physical Description The Duke de Chartres led the party chasing the first manned hydrogen balloon flown by Charles and Robert, and was reputed to be the first to reach the landing site. He became a balloon enthusiast. Benjamin Franklin was invited to visit a friend’s home for “tea and balloons,” and attended a fête at which the duke distributed “little phaloid balloonlets” to his guests.
