	Summary
	John H. Glenn, Jr., retired Colonel and aviator of the United States Marine Corps and member of the “Mercury 7” astronauts, and retired from NASA on January 16, 1964, to run for the U.S. Senate seat from Ohio. His first two attempts to gain the seat failed. However, in 1974, he was victorious over fellow Democrat Howard Metzenbaum in the primary election. Then, he defeated Republican Ralph Perk in the general election on November 5. Glenn held the Ohio senate seat from 1974 until 1999 when he retired.
